Melanie's pictures from Pompei

Pompei Scavi (the ruins of ancient Pompeii) is pretty much my favorite place as far historical sites go. This was my third time there and each visit has been truly magical.

Aesthetically, it is a beautiful place and a unique historical gem. It's massive, and surprisingly intact and recognizable as a city. Stone row homes and streets paved with even larger stones, it doesn't really look much different from South Philly or other older American cities.

Being there is intense and humbling, and fills me with a profound sense of my own mortality and insignificance. It's not depressing, necessarily, but exploring the ruins of an entire city from thousands of years ago does make one realize how tiny our existences really are.

New favorites include: all the beautiful and well-preserved frescoes I had never seen, the bakery, which had brick ovens that look exactly like modern pizza ovens, the remote house with the little courtyard where we had a romantic lunch picnic, and the baths I had never seen before.

Being there always makes me think how nuts it is that humans have just been doing the same things for thousands of years. We are funny animals!
